How often does legal cannabis fail lab testing?

The short answer

Rarely, at the final compliance stage: of the 6,744 batches in this index that carry a pass or fail verdict, 9 failed, a failure rate of 0.13%. That number describes finished products tested for sale in legal markets, not everything growers produce: material that fails earlier, gets remediated, or is never submitted does not appear on finished-good certificates, so the true cull rate upstream is higher than any retail-stage figure can show. Alongside those 9 failures, state regulators have 188 recalls on file in this index, 49 of them mandatory, for products that had already passed testing and reached shelves.

The rate, market by market

MarketVerdict-carrying batchesFailedFailure rate
California1,23900.00%
Federal hemp market2100.00%
New York5,48490.16%

399 further certificates in the index are informational panels that make no pass or fail claim (common for hemp products and R&D testing); they are excluded from every rate above rather than counted as passes or failures.

Every failure, named

A failure rate without the failures is just reassurance. These are the batches behind the number, each linked to its record and the laboratory document it came from.

Why the retail-stage rate runs low

Three structural reasons, none of them scandalous. First, selection: a producer who doubts a batch can test it informally first, remediate it, or not submit it, so the compliance certificate pool is pre-filtered toward passes. Second, remediation: a failed batch can often be reworked (for example, extracted) and retested, and only the eventual pass may surface publicly. Third, survivorship in publication: this index can only hold certificates that become public, and passes are shared more eagerly than failures. All three push the same direction, which is why this article reports the honest number and its scope instead of presenting 99.87% passing as the whole story.

Failures are not the only safety signal

Recalls catch what testing missed or what changed after testing. The 188 recall actions on file here, 49 of them mandatory, applied to products that had passed compliance testing. The recall record and the per-brand recall history on every brand page are the other half of any answer about how often legal cannabis goes wrong.

Method

Population: every certificate in this index carrying an explicit pass or fail verdict, as issued by the testing laboratory; informational certificates are excluded from rates and counted separately. Figures recompute from the live dataset on every site build, so the numbers on this page always match the downloadable export. What this page cannot measure: failures that never produced a public certificate. Scope and limitations of the whole index are documented on the methodology page.
